FAQ - Your questions? We got answers!
Which desktop applications come with the Business and Business Premium plans?
Not all the plans are available with desktop applications (i.e. applications that you can download) – they are limited to Business and Premium plans. Business Essentials users have access to only the online versions of the applications, which can be accessed through a web browser. The following are available to users of different operating systems:
- Available to PC users: Microsoft Office 2016 versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote and the desktop version of Skype for Business (formerly Lync).
- Available to Mac users: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Lync.
Do you need Internet access for Office 365 to work?
You’ll need internet access to install and activate 365. Other admin functions such as changing your billing options and managing your OneDrive data also require you to be online (unless you install the OneDrive desktop app). Please note that online access is required for the latest updates and features from Microsoft. However, to use the business productivity applications, you don’t need to be online.
Are files created in Office 365 compatible with earlier versions of Office?
Office 365 supports, and is backward compatible, with Office 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016. The same goes for Office for Mac 2008 and Mac 2011. Note that clients running earlier versions may need to install a small and freely downloadable compatibility pack from Microsoft.
Do I have control of my documents with Office 365?
All Office 365 belongs to your organisation and you can choose to either store it on Microsoft’s OneDrive or on your network’s local resources. We advise using OneDrive to keep your data safe and secure in the cloud.
Will Office 365 work the same across all my devices?
Office 365 is tailored to work optimally with every device and operating system it supports to ensure the best performance and experience for users. Note that every iteration of Office (Mac, PC, Android, etc.) may have different version numbers, but are in fact running the latest versions of each.
What is Office Online?
Office Online comprises the Microsoft productivity suite of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, which can be accessed online. This means you can access them from anywhere with a web browser. The use of these applications in the Cloud, combined with your Cloud storage and delivered by OneDrive for Business, open up a world of collaboration. Now you can share, edit and create documents that can be edited by colleagues or other parties.
Can a larger organisation use Office 365?
The Business, Business Essentials and Business Premium plans are designed for no more than 300 users. This means that a single organisation can buy a maximum of 900 plans with 300 licences under each plan.
